How to request an accessible version of content from Newspapers.com Library Edition
Answer
Newspapers.com Library Edition primarily hosts scanned images of newspaper pages rather than fully accessible HTML articles. However, the site applies optical character recognition (OCR) to these scans. To view the OCR text, you can do the following:
- Open a newspaper page on Newspapers.com.
- Check the page’s URL in your browser’s address bar.
- Replace /image/ in the URL with /newspage/.
- Reload the page.
The reloaded page will display text-based headlines generated from the OCR. These headlines include hyperlinks that let you navigate to the corresponding articles within the scanned image.
To obtain the OCR text for a specific article:
- Make sure you are logged in to Newspapers.com. If you don’t already have an account, you can register for a free one.
- Use the Clip tool to draw a box around the article you want.
- In the clipping panel on the right side of the page, click Save.
- Open the saved clipping (via View Clip), then scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Select Show Article Text to view the OCR content.
OCR accuracy varies by newspaper quality, date, and print condition.
The vendor does not offer remediation services directly. To obtain an accessible version of the content, please work with UM ATS.
